Andy Hakala
Andy is one of the "up and comers" in the Twin Cities jazz scene. In 2002 he moved to the Twin Cities after graduating from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Soon after arriving he became active in the big band scene playing with the Cedar Avenue Big Band, Nova Big Band, The Twin Cities Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz MN Big Band.
At the same time, Andy began working with the Jack Brass Band and became immersed in the New Orleans style of trumpet playing. With the Jack Brass, Andy has had the opportunity to perform in the streets and clubs of New Orleans with musicians who helped create this unique style of playing.
Currently Andy plays full time with the Southside Aces, The Jack Brass Band and The Paula Ostrom Big Band. He also maintains a small private studio and is available for clinics.
Andy Hakala
Andy "El Mustachio" Hakala was born in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin to a family of hirsute lumberjacks. In grade school, Andy "Super Mario" Hakala excelled at whittling, fur trapping, and whistling jaunty tunes. The first summer job that Andy "The Roughrider" Hakala held was working on a moustache ranch just south of Spooner. There, Andy "Snidely Whiplash" Hakala, with just a set of golden trimmers, a can of wax and a dream, learned the art of taming the wild moustache. In lieu of pay, Andy "Wild Bill Hickok" Hakala was given 5 cases of Leinenkugel's a week, just enough to ease a young boy’s homesickness. Andy "Rollie Fingers" Hakala moved to Milwaukee at the age of 17, where he saved for college by working in a moustache forge. Early symptoms of Moustache Lung forced Andy "General Beauregard" Hakala to resign and consider a career path outside of the moustache game. Falling back on his childhood education, Andy "The Gondolier" Hakala secured employment as the "Whittlin' Whistler" of Kenosha County during Ye Olde Tymey Dayz. Susan, the Sassafras booth-lass, caught the eye of Andy "King Kelly" Hakala, and the two were soon wedded. With his 12 cats and new bride in tow, smelling of sassafras root, wood-shavings and Friskies, Andy "Ming the Merciless" Hakala moved to Minneapolis to further his musical ambition. Andy "Quigley Down Under" Hakala plays trumpet for the Southside Aces.
